Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Perpetrator.

Two students who died in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, remarking: “Words cannot express. Remembering her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were injured in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.

The assailant discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a police source reported to the media outlet.

Law enforcement that entered the inn found two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was detained, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”

National Context

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
