The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
