Whenever a significant honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
