A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
