Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
